Blizzards, Blackouts and Bankruptcies: Texas Electricity After Winter Storm Uri

A Conversation with Robert Bryce

Multimedia

2021 Bryce Event

Winter storm Uri wreaked unexpected havoc February 13 – 17, and precipitated the 2021 Texas Power Crisis, which resulted in widespread damage to homes and businesses, water shortages, and nearly 100 deaths.

Expecting only rolling power outages, millions of Texans were ambushed by blackouts lasting for days. In addition to the estimated $195 billion in economic damage, the power crisis also injured Texans’ image of their state as better run than other states.

We are still coming to understand what went wrong, where the responsibility may lie, and how we can ensure that nothing like this ever happens again in Texas.

The Institute for Policy Innovation is delighted to host noted energy expert Robert Bryce, who himself spent the crisis in Austin, to help us understand what went wrong and what needs to change. Mr. Bryce is the author of a number of books and articles on energy policy, including his 2020 book entitled “A Question of Power: Electricity and the Wealth of Nations.” He also wrote “Power Hungry: The Myths of Green Energy and the Real Fuels of the Future” in 2010.

Please join IPI on March 24th for this very important and timely online event with Robert Bryce.
