DALLAS – President Trump delivers his first State of the Union address before a divided Congress on Tuesday night, where his priorities to unfetter the private sector, rev up economic engines and enhance national security will starkly contrast Democrats’ increasingly socialist-leaning platform.
While Democrats promise to cure the economy’s ills with an impracticable “Green New Deal,” look for the president to announce new executive actions to boost the U.S. energy industry, said Institute for Policy Innovation (IPI) resident scholar Dr. Merrill Matthews. “Trump’s efforts have not only helped make the U.S. a worldwide energy powerhouse but has cut Russia's revenue and hampered Putin’s ability to use oil and gas as a foreign policy weapon to create global mischief.”
Matthews also expects Trump to announce progress with China on trade, specifically some resolution in the months-long tariff standoff, and a breakthrough in U.S. demands for China on technology transfer and intellectual property protections.
The same Democrats who rammed through Obamacare, falsely promising lower prices and that patients could keep their doctor, now want a single-payer government health care system, referred to as “Medicare for all.” Matthews anticipates President Trump to expose socialist health care schemes as expensive healthcare-for-none that would actually harm seniors who currently rely on Medicare. Matthews also hopes the president will shine a light on middlemen and insurer practices in addressing the soaring cost of out-of-pocket drug spending.
“As more Democrats jump into the 2020 presidential ring, the policy differences between them and Republicans have never been more apparent,” said Matthews. “And the State of the Union will shine a light on those differences.”
“After a year of solid economic growth, the president has real results he can tout. But Trump must find a resolution to the trade wars, which left unsolved could undermine all this economic progress.”
