Daniel Hannan: While the nascent Tea Party phenomenon was erupting in the U.S., fiscal restraint found its European voice on March 29, 2009. On that date, Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan became an overnight celebrity after he assailed British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on the floor of the European Parliament in opposition to Brown’s tax increases, exorbitant spending, and record borrowing in the current economic crisis. After theYouTube video went viral, the recording became the most viewed on the site for the next two days, and to date has over 2.8 million hits. (Watch the video here.)

Hannan has since appeared numerous times in conservative media warning the U.S. not to adopt failed European policies such as socialized medicine, outrageous stimulus spending efforts, and economically crushing cap and trade policies.

Hannan has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999, representing South East England for the Conservative Party and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) political group. He is also a journalist and writes a regular blog for the Daily Telegraph. He has published several books, most recently The New Road to Serfdom: A Letter of Warning to America in which he argues that Americans must not allow the Obama Administration to take them down the road to European Union–style socialism. He is a regular media commentator in both the U.S. and UK and has appeared on Fox News, MSNBC, the BBC and other outlets. He blogs daily at www.hannan.co.uk. "Why is a European politician urging America to avoid Europeanization? As a Briton, I see the American republic as a repository of our traditional freedoms. The doctrines rooted in the common law, in the Magna Carta, and in the Bill of Rights found their fullest and most sublime expression in the old courthouse of Philadelphia. Britain, as a result of its unhappy membership in the European Union, has now surrendered a large part of its birthright. But our freedoms live on in America... So you can imagine how I feel when I see the U.S. making the same mistakes that Britain has made: expanding its government, regulating private commerce, centralizing its jurisdiction, breaking the link between taxation and representation, abandoning its sovereignty. You deserve better, cousins. And we expect better." A European’s Warning to America, Daniel Hannan, Wall Street Journal, March 2011
