For all of the quality care it delivers, the U.S. health care system is one of the most dysfunctional sectors of the U.S. economy. The government spends nearly 50 cents of every dollar spent on health care, most consumers are almost entirely insulated from the cost of their decisions, and employers decide what kind of health insurance their employees get.
But while the U.S. health care system begs for reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act only exacerbates all of the current problems, promising to devolve into a price-controlled system rationed and micromanaged by bureaucrats.
IPI believes there are much better options: reform the tax treatment of health insurance; remove the state and federal mandates and regulations that make coverage more expensive; pass medical liability reform; and promote policies that create value-conscious shoppers in the health care marketplace.

A president’s last State of the Union Address is often about defending his legacy. And he will have to because no one else will.
House Sending ACA Repeal Bill to President; Veto Certain
The repeated congressional attempts to repeal the ACA reflect the law's unpopularity, said IPI's Merrill Matthews. About 40% approve and 52% disapprove of the ACA, according to a December CBS News poll. "It's about premiums and high deductibles. If people had seen premiums going down, you would see widespread support for Obamacare. But, what you do have is something that has created turmoil in the market and a huge amount of frustration with people trying to get affordable coverage."
A Republican President's Executive Order Could Undermine Obamacare
An executive order isn’t the best way to topple Obamacare, but Obama has used that tactic so many times that it will be very hard for future presidents to reject it when an executive order could be used effectively.
Big Policy Reforms Republican Candidates Should Embrace in 2016
With the possible exception of tax reform, very few conservatives will accuse the GOP presidential candidates of bold policy proposals. So maybe the candidates could use some suggestions.

These five numbers—60, 57, 68, 57 and 46—could doom any Democratic presidential candidate, regardless of who the Republicans nominate.
Wouldn't It Be Great If We Could Make Obama Live Under the Same Laws We Do?
While millions of lower-income Americans will be struggling to find a job or get enough hours to pay the bills, Obama won’t have to worry when he's out of office.
Is United Healthcare Leaving A 'Death Spiral' For Exchanges?
The insurer UnitedHealthcare has recently announced that it would consider moving away from the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges due to significant profit losses. If there are significant losses and little financial gains, more payers may consider leaving the health insurance exchanges as well.
Hillarycare Tried to Put Everyone in an HMO, Obamacare Is Succeeding
The Clintons tried to put every American in an HMO and the public soundly rejected that attempt by voting Democrats in 1994; Obama is succeeding where the Clintons failed and the public is punishing Democrats for it.
